Gewölbe — 'Vault' — takes its name from the arched underground space it occupies in Ehrenfeld, Cologne's most creatively vibrant neighbourhood. The venue specialises in the darker end of the electronic spectrum: industrial techno, EBM, and experimental electronic music that requires the right setting to make sense. The low vaulted ceiling concentrates the sound in a way that creates a physical, immersive experience, and the lighting design amplifies the underground atmosphere. Gewölbe attracts a serious electronic music crowd who come specifically for the music rather than the social scene.
Gewölbe opened in 2011 in Ehrenfeld, a neighbourhood undergoing rapid creative transformation at the time. It became an important gathering point for Cologne's underground electronic community, providing a venue willing to programme challenging, uncommercial music.
