Dame de Canton is Marseille's answer to Bristol's Thekla — a converted Chinese junk moored at the Old Port that has been operating as a live music and events venue since 2006. The boat's ornate exterior makes it one of Marseille's most photographed spots, and the interior stages an eclectic programme of jazz, electronic music, world music, and cultural events. The Mediterranean setting and nautical architecture create an atmosphere that's quintessentially Marseille — cosmopolitan, unpretentious, and full of character.
Dame de Canton was originally a Chinese river boat that was transported to France and moored at the Vieux Port in 2006. Its extraordinary backstory — sailing from China to Marseille — mirrors the Mediterranean city's own history as a trading port at the crossroads of civilisations.
