About Huber's Café

Huber's Café holds the distinction of being Oregon's oldest restaurant, and its mahogany bar, stained glass ceiling, and polished brass fixtures transport guests back to Portland's Victorian-era past. Established in 1879, the bar has outlasted countless booms and busts, Prohibition (during which it closed briefly before reopening), and a century of neighbourhood change to remain one of the city's most beloved institutions. The venue is particularly famous for its Spanish Coffee, a tableside flambé ritual that has become as much a Portland rite of passage as any concert or club night. The combination of historic atmosphere, impeccably made classic cocktails, and genuine warmth from its long-tenured staff makes Huber's an essential Portland experience.

History

Founded in 1879 by Frank Huber, the café passed through several ownerships before settling into the Louie family's stewardship in the 20th century, who preserved its historic character through Portland's many transformations. The Spanish Coffee tradition was introduced in the 1970s and has since become one of the city's most recognisable bar rituals, featured in countless travel guides and local lore.
