The Aztec Theatre is among the most architecturally remarkable concert venues in the United States, a 2,200-capacity room housed in a 1926 Aztec Mayan Revival masterpiece on San Antonio's Commerce Street. The theatre's original decorative scheme — featuring intricately detailed Mesoamerican-inspired plasterwork, murals, and a ceiling that recalls the night sky above a pre-Columbian temple — creates an experience that transforms every concert into something approaching the theatrical. After decades as a cinema and a period of closure, the Aztec was sensitively restored and opened as a concert venue, drawing major touring acts from rock, pop, country, and Latin music who appreciate both the acoustic qualities and the sheer visual drama of the space.
Opened in 1926 as one of San Antonio's grand movie palaces, the Aztec Theatre was designed by Robert Kelly in the Aztec Mayan Revival style inspired by the 1920s fascination with Mesoamerican archaeology. After closure and restoration, it was reopened as a concert venue in the early 2000s and has since become one of San Antonio's most important cultural institutions and a recognised landmark.
