Berghain is the most celebrated and mythologised nightclub in the world. Housed in a former East Berlin power plant on the border of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, the club is famous for its marathon weekend sessions — running continuously from Friday night to Monday morning — its notoriously selective door policy, and its strict no-photography rule. The main room, Berghain, features a sound system designed by Funktion-One that is widely considered the finest in the world. The upstairs Panorama Bar hosts house music, while the Kantine provides a more accessible daytime space. Berghain was ranked 21st in DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs in April 2026.
Berghain opened in 2004, taking its name from a portmanteau of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. It was founded by Michael Teufele and Norbert Thormann, who had previously run the Ostgut club in the same building. Berghain quickly became the most important club in the world, attracting pilgrims from every continent and spawning a global mythology around its door policy, its music, and its atmosphere.
