Robert Johnson is, by almost any measure, one of the most important clubs in the history of electronic music. Since 1997, this modest venue in Offenbach — Frankfurt's less glamorous neighbour — has hosted an almost impossibly influential roster of DJs and shaped the sound of European house and techno for two decades. The club has no social media presence, no website worth speaking of, and actively discourages photography. What it does have is a sound system of mythic quality, a crowd that comes to dance, and a booking policy that has introduced the world to artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, and the entire Playhouse and Perlon labels. Pilgrimage is the only word for a visit to Robert Johnson.
Founded in 1997 by Ata Macias and Heiko M/S/O, Robert Johnson became the epicentre of a distinctly European sound that blended house, techno, and jazz influences into what became known as the 'Frankfurt sound.' Its influence on electronic music production and DJ culture throughout the 2000s and 2010s is impossible to overstate.
