Sub Club is one of the most celebrated clubs in the world, a remarkably intimate 410-capacity basement under Jamaica Street that has been home to some of the greatest club nights in British history since 1987. The club's Funktion-One sound system is considered one of the finest in existence, and the combination of the Subculture and Optimo parties over decades has established Sub Club as a global pilgrimage site for electronic music lovers. Despite — or perhaps because of — its small size, the intensity and musical quality of a Sub Club night is unrivalled. It is the soul of Glasgow's clubbing culture.
Sub Club opened in 1987 beneath a Jamaica Street clothes shop and quickly became central to Glasgow's emerging house and techno scene. The Subculture night, launched in 1994 by DJs Harri and Domenic, became one of the longest-running and most celebrated club nights in the world. Optimo, launched in 1997 by JD Twitch and JG Wilkes, expanded the club's reputation further. Sub Club was destroyed by fire in 1999 but rebuilt and reopened in 2001 stronger than ever.
