Sala El Sol is one of Madrid's oldest and most historically significant music venues, operating since 1979 in the heart of the city near Puerta del Sol. The intimate 400-capacity space was at the epicentre of La Movida Madrileña, the explosive cultural movement that swept Spain following Francisco Franco's death. Concerts, club nights, and cultural events coexist in the programming, reflecting the venue's broad cultural mission. El Sol remains a beloved institution that connects contemporary Madrid nightlife to its rich and rebellious heritage.
Sala El Sol opened in 1979, just as Spain was emerging from the Franco era, and immediately became a gathering point for the artists, musicians, and free spirits of La Movida. Performers including Alaska, Mecano, and Radio Futura all played here in their early careers. The venue has carefully preserved its counter-cultural identity through four decades of changing musical fashions.
