La Piojera is Santiago's most celebrated historic bar, operating since 1916 in the same location and maintaining an atmosphere that transports visitors directly to the heart of traditional Chilean drinking culture. The bar is famous as the birthplace of the Terremoto — a lethal cocktail of fermented chicha, pineapple ice cream and grenadine served in litre glasses — and its clientele spans every social class and background, from parliamentarians to street workers. The sawdust floors, communal tables and extraordinary atmosphere have made La Piojera a genuine cultural institution.
La Piojera opened in 1916 and has operated continuously for over a century, surviving earthquakes, coups and economic crises. It was famously visited by President Bachelet and Pope Francis's entourage during his 2018 Chile visit. Its survival as an unreconstructed traditional Chilean bar in a city of rapid modernisation makes it one of the most valuable cultural institutions in Santiago.
