Brighton seafront with the iconic pier lit up at night
The UK's most free-spirited city — LGBTQ+ bars in Kemptown, North Laine indie pubs, beach raves and the Great Escape festival.

Kemptown, east of the pier along St James's Street, is Brighton's LGBTQ+ heartland and one of the most welcoming and characterful bar strips in Britain. Charles Street Tap, Legends and Revenge are the three pillars of the scene — between them they offer pub atmosphere, cocktail bars and full late-night clubbing. Pride in August makes this area completely euphoric; the rest of the year it's warmly buzzing.
North Laine is Brighton's bohemian grid — a network of narrow streets north of the clock tower lined with independent shops, vegan restaurants, record shops and some of the best pub interiors in the country. The Evening Star on Surrey Street (excellent craft beer, tiny and perfect), The Greys (Victorian corner pub, unchanged for decades), and The Basketmakers Arms are three Brighton institutions you should visit before trying the clubs.
Patterns on the seafront beneath the arches is Brighton's leading electronic music venue. Two rooms, a concrete floor and a booking policy that consistently brings the best house and techno acts before they outgrow the venue. The terrace with sea views is extraordinary in summer. Open Thursday to Sunday.
The Great Escape in May is the UK's answer to SXSW — a music industry conference meets city-wide festival, with 450 bands playing across 30+ Brighton venues over three days. For nightlife it means the entire city is running late-night showcases simultaneously, the crowd is music-obsessed, and every pub and club has a reason to be in it. Wristbands give access to everything.
Brighton's pebble beach runs beach bars along the seafront — particularly the stretch between the two piers. In summer these go late and occasionally host DJ sets. Coalition under the arches is the most established beach bar-club hybrid, running since 1993.
Southern Rail runs trains from London Victoria to Brighton in 55 minutes, with last trains back around 1–2 AM and first trains from 5 AM. Many people stay over and return the next morning.
Cheaper than London, broadly similar to other UK cities. Pints £4.50–6, cocktails £9–12, club entry typically £5–15.
