The Energy: Ximending

Ximending is the pedestrianised neon quarter — street performers, cinema row, endless snack stalls and the city's densest budget hotel stock. It's loud, young and fun, ideal for first-timers who want Taipei at full volume the moment they step outside. Longshan Temple and the airport MRT connection sit one stop away.

Other Options

• Xinyi — the skyline district: five-star towers, mall basements, rooftop bars and the club cluster under Taipei 101.
• Zhongshan — design hotels and hidden bars off linear-park lanes; the stylish middle ground.
• Songshan (Raohe) — beside the best night market and riverside paths; quieter, great value.
• Beitou — hot-spring resort hotels in the volcanic valley; a retreat, not a base, 30 minutes out by MRT.

Practical Tips

Taipei hotels are good value by East Asian capital standards. The MRT closes around midnight — after that, taxis are cheap and honest, so a Da'an or Ximending base keeps late-night rides short. Summer (June–September) is typhoon and humidity season; book flexible rates and pack for rain.
