Thekla is genuinely one of the most unique live music and club venues in the world — a converted German cargo ship moored permanently in Bristol's Floating Harbour. Since 1983, this floating venue has hosted everyone from Massive Attack and Portishead in their early years to today's emerging indie and electronic acts. The lower deck serves as the main stage and dance floor while the upper decks provide bars and social space with views across the harbour. Being on a boat creates an atmosphere that no land-based venue can replicate.
The MV Thekla was built in 1958 as a German cargo vessel before being converted into a floating entertainment venue in 1983. It has been moored in Bristol Harbour ever since, becoming one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. The venue played a role in nurturing Bristol's legendary trip-hop scene in the early 1990s.
