Café Havana is the most famous nightlife institution in Cartagena and arguably the most celebrated salsa club in Colombia. Since 1993 it has occupied a corner of Getsemaní's Calle 24, welcoming everyone from backpackers to international celebrities with an egalitarian spirit that mirrors the neighbourhood's own character. Live bands perform classic salsa, cumbia, and vallenato through the night, and the dance floor becomes increasingly packed as the hours pass. The bar's rum selection is exceptional, with a particular emphasis on Cuban and Colombian labels, and the rum cocktails — especially the mojitos — are among the best in the Caribbean. Café Havana is one of those rare places where the reality matches the legend.
Café Havana opened in 1993 during a period when Getsemaní was still a working-class neighbourhood on the margins of Cartagena's tourist trail. The bar's success over three decades has paralleled Getsemaní's transformation into one of Latin America's most vibrant and celebrated urban neighbourhoods.
