Rooftop salsa in a UNESCO walled city, beach clubs on private islands
Cartagena de Indias is one of South America's most romantic and intoxicating nightlife destinations. The UNESCO-listed walled city (Ciudad Amurallada) comes alive after dark: colonial courtyards transform into salsa dance floors, rooftop terraces fill with Caribbean breezes, and the sound of champeta and vallenato spills from every doorway. Getsemaní — once gritty, now one of Latin America's coolest barrios — has the most authentic local scene, while Bocagrande's beach strip and the private island clubs accessible by water taxi represent the more exclusive end of Cartagena's extraordinary spectrum of nightlife options.

The Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada) is where to start — rooftop bars like Alquímico and Café del Mar offer spectacular views of the illuminated colonial walls. Getsemaní's Plaza de la Trinidad is Cartagena's most authentically local party spot, filling with street vendors, dancers and sound systems every evening.
Café Havana in Getsemaní is Cartagena's most famous club — a legendary salsa and Cuban music venue with no air conditioning and maximum atmosphere. Tu Candela is another iconic salsa venue. For more commercial nightlife, the Bocagrande hotels have clubs and beach bars open until late.
Cartagena parties run late — clubs typically fill after midnight and stay open until 3–5 AM. Café Havana is famous for going until sunrise on weekends. The beach bars in Bocagrande operate from afternoon into the early hours. Cartagena's year-round tropical warmth means outdoor venues operate every night.
Cartagena is more expensive than inland Colombian cities like Medellín but still good value for international visitors. A cocktail costs COP 25,000–50,000 (€5–10), club entry COP 20,000–60,000 (€4–12). Café Havana has no cover but expect to buy drinks. Budget €40–80 for a full evening.
