Bakken is the rough-edged counterpart to Kødbyen's more polished venues, a deliberately unvarnished club that celebrates the district's industrial heritage in its aesthetic and its programming. The venue's alternative and electronic music nights attract Copenhagen's most genuinely eclectic crowd — artists, musicians and creative workers who prize energy and authenticity over production values. Bakken's willingness to take risks with bookings and events has made it a crucible for Copenhagen's alternative culture that the more commercially focused venues in the district cannot replicate.
Bakken opened in 2012 as Kødbyen was being developed into Copenhagen's most dynamic nightlife and restaurant district. It carved out its niche by deliberately going against the direction of other Kødbyen venues — embracing rough edges rather than polish, community rather than glamour.
