Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs — the name translates roughly as 'Folk Club Cave Basement' — occupies a magnificent vaulted cellar dating back to the medieval period, and has been Riga's premier destination for Latvian folk culture and craft beer since 1998. The bar is the headquarters of a folk music revival movement, hosting live performances of traditional Latvian music, dainas (folk songs), and pagan ritual celebrations throughout the year. The drinks menu is a love letter to Latvian brewing, featuring dozens of local craft beers alongside traditional herbal drinks. The cellar's stone walls, candlelight, and the sound of acoustic instruments create one of the most atmospheric nights out in Northern Europe.
Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs was established in 1998 as Latvia was rediscovering its pre-Soviet cultural identity following independence. It became a gathering place for folk musicians, academics, and anyone interested in preserving Latvian heritage, gradually evolving into one of the Old Town's most beloved institutions.
