Edinburgh castle and Old Town illuminated at night
Sneaky Pete's, Cowgate clubs, George Street cocktails, and the most atmospheric after-dark city in Britain.

The Cowgate runs beneath the George IV Bridge — literally underground, a valley carved through the Old Town that was historically the city's poorest quarter. Today it's Edinburgh's club district: dark arched venues, exposed stone walls, and a density of late-night options that feels genuinely subterranean. Cabaret Voltaire, La Belle Angèle and The Liquid Room all sit here or within a few minutes' walk.
Sneaky Pete's on Victoria Street is a 100-capacity venue that has built a reputation far beyond its size — it books international electronic acts who play intimate sets before they graduate to festival main stages. The programming is sharp, the crowd is music-first, and the bar is cheap. It regularly sells out. Check listings and book in advance.
George Street in the New Town is Edinburgh's most upscale strip — a broad Georgian boulevard lined with restaurants that convert to cocktail bars at 10 PM. Tigerlily, The Dome and Huxleys are the anchor names. The crowd is older and smarter-dressed than the Cowgate; the music is softer and the prices are higher. Good for a sophisticated evening before or instead of clubbing.
Leith, Edinburgh's port district 20 minutes north by bus, has a genuine craft bar scene developing around The Shore. Teuchters Landing, The Roseleaf and The King's Wark all serve excellent Scottish gins and whiskies in a genuinely local atmosphere completely removed from the tourist centre. An excellent evening in its own right.
During August's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the entire city becomes a performance venue. Every pub, club, converted car park and church hall hosts shows until 1 AM; after-show parties run until 4. The atmosphere is unlike anything in Britain — 250 shows a day, 3,000 performers, and a city of 500,000 people hosting 2 million visitors. Plan far ahead for accommodation.
August (Fringe) for atmosphere and variety; Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) for the world's greatest street party; any weekend year-round for the Cowgate and Sneaky Pete's.
Most clubs are licensed until 3 AM. Some late-licence venues run until 5 AM at weekends.
More expensive than Glasgow but cheaper than London. Expect £5–10 club entry, £6–9 cocktails, and £4–5.50 for a pint.
