Dark underground club interior with crowd under dramatic lighting
One room, 410 people, and the best sound system in the UK — why Sub Club is still the world's greatest small club.

Sub Club is a single basement room on Jamaica Street in Glasgow city centre. It holds 410 people at capacity and feels exactly that size — intimate enough to feel every element of the music, large enough to lose yourself in the crowd. The low ceiling, exposed pipes and dim lighting create an atmosphere that bigger venues spend millions trying to recreate and never quite manage.
The Funktion-One installation at Sub Club is spoken about with genuine reverence by DJs and music-heads. It was installed in the early 2000s and has been maintained and upgraded carefully ever since. The bass response in particular is exceptional — music you've heard a hundred times sounds different here. It's worth going for the sound system alone.
Optimo is Sub Club's flagship night — a Sunday residency that has run since 1997 and remains one of the most important club nights in the world. JD Twitch and JG Wilkes play anything: techno, no wave, post-punk, disco, ambient — often within the same hour. The crowd knows music and goes with it completely. If you're going to Glasgow for one night out, make it an Optimo Sunday.
Sub Club has a door policy but it's not about appearance — it's about attitude. Show up looking like you're there for the music, not for Instagram, and you'll be fine. The queue on Saturday nights builds from about 11 PM; for Optimo the queue starts earlier. Entry is typically £8–15 depending on the night. Cash preferred at the door.
For regular Saturday nights, queuing on the night usually gets you in if you arrive before 1 AM. For special events and Optimo, check their website — tickets sometimes sell out in advance.
Primarily house and techno, but with a notably broad and curious programming policy. Optimo in particular plays across genres freely. The common thread is quality.
