The 1.5km beach of La Malagueta is Málaga city's main seafront. The chiringuito strip along the promenade runs from basic no-frills beach bars to proper beach clubs with sunbeds, cocktail menus and DJ afternoons. La Moraga is the standout — a proper beach club (sunbeds, pool, cocktail menu) that runs DJ sets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons from June.
Take bus 11 or 3 from the centre east along the coast and you reach Pedregalejo — a string of former fishing villages where the chiringuito culture is completely uncontaminated by tourism. El Cabra, El Caleño and Merendero El Espigón are three institutions that have been grilling sardines on the beach since before most visitors were born. Order espetos, cold beer, and a table with your feet in the sand.
El Tintero at El Palo beach is unlike any restaurant you've been to. The food is fresh fish grilled in the kitchen and the waiters run through the packed dining room shouting the name of each dish. You put your hand up, they put the plate down. Pay at the end by the pile of cocktail sticks. Chaotic, loud, extraordinary. Go for lunch — the beach afternoon afterwards is perfect.
Rent a car and the Costa del Sol opens up dramatically. Puerto Banús (30 minutes west) has Nikki Beach — the most famous beach club in Spain. Further west, Marbella's Playa de la Fontanilla is ringed with excellent beach clubs at every price point. East of Málaga, Nerja's Burriana beach has a more laid-back chiringuito strip that's a world away from Marbella excess.
Most open from May and close at the end of October. Peak season is July–August when every chiringuito and beach club runs at full capacity.
About 55km — a 40-minute drive or 45-minute bus journey. Several bus services run from Málaga bus station to Marbella throughout the day.
For basic chiringuitos, no. For La Moraga DJ days or Nikki Beach Marbella in high season, yes — book at least a week ahead.
