Ex Dogana occupies a sprawling former customs warehouse in the regenerating Ostiense district, functioning as both a major concert venue and a club space that hosts some of Rome's most significant cultural events. The venue's enormous outdoor area becomes a festival ground in summer, while the internal spaces host everything from intimate DJ sets to major live shows. Ex Dogana has been central to Ostiense's transformation into Rome's creative quarter, attracting a young, culturally engaged audience. Its hybrid programming model — spanning music, art, food, and activism — mirrors similar spaces in Berlin and London.
Ex Dogana opened in 2013 as part of a wave of cultural spaces that colonised Rome's abandoned industrial buildings. The project was conceived as a social experiment as much as a commercial venue, with community programming and affordable entry prices built into its DNA. It has since hosted national and international names across music and the arts, cementing Ostiense's status as Rome's cultural frontier.
